Biology course. Nordic-Baltic-Russian academic network in Bioinformatics starts a series of master degree courses
2006-03-08
Network in bioinformatics announces a call to master degree course "Biology". Course will start in April 11, 2006 with distance learning part and face-to-face meeting take place in Lithuanian Veterinary Academy in May 21-28, 2006. Deadline for registration is set to April 3.

The "Biology" course is the first of the 3 planned courses in Bioinformatics field. Students are strongly encouraged to plan their participation in all 3 courses as they will have continuation elements within them. The general objective of the "Biology" course is to provide an introduction and overview to the field of biology (with emphasis on molecular biology). The course mainly concentrates on genome analysis in domestic animals, but the methods and theories taught are applicable in all higher organisms. The course gives in-depth knowledge of methods for studies of the mammalian genome and it structure and evolution.

The course consist of:

  • the distance learning part - 1,5 month before the course students will get the pre-reading material;
  • face-to-face meeting where lectures will be given by Baltic and Russian teachers as well as the practical training, the short ( 5-7 min) presentation of their research work and group discussion.

Biology course covers biological make up of living organisms, cells and chromosomes, DNA and proteins, DNA code, central dogma, genes, genomics and proteomics, genomes of prokaryotes, genomes of eukaryotes, human genome, evolution of genomes, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and its testing methods, Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) identification, causative gene identification, biotechnology, bioethics. Workshops during this course will offer possibility to get acquainted with basic molecular methods: DNA extraction, PCR, RFLP, electrophoresis, genotyping and chromosome analysis methods.

Two following master degree courses in the Bioinformatics network will be "Biological data analysis" (Estonia) and "Bioinformatics (Latvia)".
