NOVA-BOVA Postgraduate course �Ethnobotany in the Baltic region�

Ethnobotany is the study of how people of a particular culture and region have made use of indigenous plants in everyday life, how they conceptualise plants in their local environments. It is an interdisciplinary science with increasing importance and has its roots in botany, natural and environmental sciences, ethnography, sociology, medicine and pharmacology.

ECTS

You can receive 3 ECTS if study obligatory literature, participate in the course part and submit and present individual work. Depending on your individual presentation quality and discussion quality during seminars and work in groups you can receive additional 1 to 2 ECTS.

Assignment for work at home to prepare for the course

Individual distance studies, preparation of home-work and presentation of the topics proposed by course organizers. Presentations should concentrate on the problems in home countries.

Each student should prepare the analysis of use of particular plant species. After that student should describe few possible applications of the same plant more detail. Students are free to decide what plant species to choose for this task.

Students are asked to choose the field of interest and send the title to course leader till the agreed date. After confirmation students should prepare presentation about the problem related to country they live.

Suggested topics (examples) for home tasks in the last course were:

    - Ceremonial l role of plants in Latvian culture (1st day)
    - Greening of private houses in Lithuania- historical review (2nd day)
    - Development of gardens in Estonia (2nd day)
    - Pot plant market in Estonia (3rd day)
    - Edible brassicas, their use in Lithuania (4th day)
    - Use of medical plants for cure of inflammatory diseases in Latvia (5th day)
