"Weed Biology and Management"

Course summary

The aim of the proposed course is to give an overview of modern industrial and non-chemical weed management system, to exchange information on the current state of knowledge and experience in weed biology and management system strategy, to improve the analytic skills of weed scientists and to create contacts among them.

The course will emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of modern weed science integrating with plant science, crop ecology, agroecology and weed control engineering. The programme of the course will include lectures and discussions on weed biology and ecology, indirect weed management and direct management.

During the group-work sessions, the participants will analyse the typical weed biology and management issues in Baltic, Nordic and Central European countries.

The course will consist of following parts:

  1. A course introduction via e-mail and webpage;
  2. Individual studies of literature;
  3. Group work on a selected topic within weed biology and management;
  4. 1 week meeting at the end of the course, encompassing:
  • examination of literature;
  • lectures by invited teachers;
  • presentations of students' PhD projects in a poster session;
  • presentation of group work at the seminar;
  • field trips to an experimental farm and to an organic farm.

Course value is 10 ECTS.
